PrOTOtyping process
IDEATION ONE
One night in Jacob's Maker Space was all it took to bring our prototype up and
flowing - literally. With the pull-through "screen" interface and strategically placed cutouts, FreeFlow allows a streamlined, intuitive process for obtaining period products in a time of need. (Above/Right) With just a shoebox, plain sheet paper, scissors, glue dots and colorful markers we assembled our prototype period product vending machine! (Upper Right) Using a sliding panel, we illustrated different user interface "screens" without digital technology. |
Large enough to store products, but not too bulky as to take over limited stall space,
FreeFlow limits the overabundance of choice ambiguity of menstrual products into a one-stop-shop for all your period needs. |
IDEATION TWO
Redesigning the initial prototype, we had an increased focus on
environmental impact, and reducing as much single use plastic as possible.
We added waste receptacles for
compostable and landfill period products, to further limit
environmental impact.

(Left) Using the initial shoebox, we incorporated a slot to retrieve the pads on a single sheet of medical grade compostable paper, and a sliding cutter to remove an individual pad.
(Right) Adding in a receptacle to dispose of the pad packaging, we designated two slots - one for compostable products and the other for landfill. |
Final Prototype
In an attempt to deter people from taking more pads than necessary, we designed a single-layer packaging system using compostable medical grade paper, which eliminates all plastic packaging. |
With the sliding cutter, our second and prototyping process makes FreeFlow streamlined, efficient, environmentally focused, affordable, and accessible for university students. |
Our redesigned final version demonstrates the functionality and conceptual ideation
towards solving the challenge of
period poverty.
